SARDES ANCIENT CITY MANISA TURKIYE

The ruins of the ancient city of Sardes, the capital of the Lydian State, are in the Sart town of Salihli District. It is known that Sart and its region have been the scene of various settlements for over 5000 years, and that it was an important settlement center during the Roman and Byzantine periods.

The city of Sardis of the Lydian period, known as the first place where money was printed under the guarantee of the state in history, became a rich city thanks to agriculture, animal husbandry, trade and gold mining in the Paktolos (Sart) Stream.
Starting from the 7th century BC to the early Byzantine period of the 7th century AD, Sardes became an important city in terms of transportation, administration and trade throughout the 14th century.

Sardis, which is mentioned in the revelation part of the Bible as one of the seven churches in Western Anatolia, which played an important role in the spread of Christianity to the west, also has a special importance in terms of religion.

The ancient city, which hosts perhaps one of the most magnificent temples of the Ionic order in the world, which has been preserved until today, has a monumental bath-gymnasium complex among preserved Roman structures and the largest synagogue of the ancient world.

Opposite the Gymnasion is a large building called the "Bronze House". This structure is located between the ridges of Tmolos (Bozdağ) Mountain and the old center of Lydia, and is one of the most eye-catching structures of antiquity.
