PRIENE ANCIENT CITY AYDIN TURKIYE



Priene is one of the important ancient cities established on the southern slope of Samsun Mountain, 15 km southwest of Söke district. 370 m. The fact that it was built on a steep rock at a height provided an advantage in resisting attacks. In addition, being on a high place allows the city to be seen from different directions. The first information about Priene, which is accepted as a member of the Ionian Union like Miletos, dates back to BC. It is found in ancient sources in the middle of the 7th century.
Among the most important structures of the city are the Temple of Demeter, the Temple of Athena, the theatre, the agora, the Temple of Zeus, the bouleuterion, the Upper Gymnasion, the Lower Gymnasion, the Egyptian Temple, the house of Alexander the Great, the Byzantine church, the necropolis and the residential areas. The theater with a capacity of 5000 people was built in BC. It was built in 350. There was a statue of Athena made of gold and ivory in front of the temple built for the goddess Athena in the most dominant place of the city. Only a part of the temple altar is still standing today.
